Lanae Alcoholum Unguentum Aquosum, also known as AVA cream, is a semi-solid dermal dosage form consisting of a W/O emulsion of wool fat alcohols, white petrolatum, liquid paraffin, and purified water. The addition of the aqueous phase fundamentally distinguishes this base from its anhydrous counterpart, Lanae Alcoholum Unguentum.
Properties
A W/O emulsion with a water content of approximately 50%. Due to the presence of water, the aqueous variant is partially washable and has a lighter, less greasy skin feel with a moderate occlusive effect.
Therapeutic application
Thanks to its balanced W/O emulsion structure, AVA cream combines a hydrating action — via the aqueous phase — with a protective and emollient effect via the lipophilic phase.
The wool fat alcohols promote penetration through the stratum corneum and enhance local water retention.
