Lipo cream is a semi-solid dermal dosage form formulated as a water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion. As a W/O‑emulsion, Lipo cream distinguishes itself from classic O/W creams due to its pronounced occlusive nature.
Properties
Lipo cream's W/O emulsion structure results in a lipid-rich phase, which forms a lasting lipid film on the skin surface. This occlusive film limits transepidermal water loss and supports the epidermal barrier. The dispersed aqueous phase contributes to a mild moisturizing effect, but the formulation remains primarily focused on barrier repair and protection.
Due to its W/O structure, its preparation requires careful processing, with attention to phase sequence, temperature control, and homogenization to ensure stability.
Lipo cream combines intensive occlusion with barrier support, making it particularly suitable for severely dry skin conditions:
- Occlusion: the lipid film reduces moisture loss and stabilizes the skin barrier
- Barrier repair: the high lipid fraction supports the reorganization of intercellular lipids in the stratum corneum
- Enhanced hydration: often used as a base for adding urea and/or sodium chloride to enhance humectant and keratolytic properties
Therapeutic application
Lipo cream is positioned as a highly occlusive, lipid-rich W/O‑base, ideally suited for: xerosis cutis, dry to very dry skin, chapped skin with fissures, situations where a lubricating, protective, and barrier-repairing formulation is required.
