Unguentum Emulsificans

Emulsifying ointment is a semi-solid dosage form composed of a mixture of white petrolatum (Vaselinum album) and liquid paraffin (Paraffinum liquidum), supplemented with cetostearyl alcohol (Alcohol cetylicus et stearylicus) as an emulsifier. The addition of cetostearyl alcohols imparts emulsifying properties to the base, enabling the incorporation of an aqueous phase.

Properties
- Washability: due to the presence of emulsifiers, the ointment is water-washable
- Trichological application: suitable for use on the hairy scalp thanks to its emulsifying properties and non-occlusive spread

Therapeutic application
Compatible with most pharmacologically active substances, notably: corticosteroids — for dermocorticoid preparations, salicylic acid — for keratolytic applications.
