Unguentum simplex is a semi-solid base consisting of a lipophilic mixture of approximately 50% petrolatum and 50% lanolin. The ointment contains no water and is completely hydrophobic.
Properties
Composed of a fatty phase with strong occlusive properties and is not easily washed off. Due to the absence of water, the formulation is stable and less susceptible to contamination.
Therapeutic application
Suitable for very dry skin, chapped and cracked skin, and situations where a strong emollient and protective effect is desired. Due to its pronounced occlusive nature, the ointment is less suitable for moist or weeping skin lesions.
Note
In a subpopulation of patients, type IV hypersensitivity reactions (delayed contact allergy) may occur. In cases of known lanolin allergy, its use should be avoided, and an alternative ointment base should be chosen.
